Op here. She cancelled for this past weekend. She says she's sick today and will pay me Friday and Saturday. I usually do not work Fri evenings. I'm so annoyed and do not know how to respond.

Why are you still there? You are clearly being taken advantage of and it won’t get better. You won’t ever see that money. Wisen up.

Hopefully she's getting a big enough refund to pay the entire 92 hours. Even if she does how will she pay you going forward?

First, figure out exactly how long it's been since you've been paid - you need to know if it was late December or sometime in January. Then here's how I'd tweak the pp's version of a note. I wouldn't threaten a lawsuit immediately but I would certainly make that the next step if she doesn't pay you this month. And I totally agree that you need to keep copies of all correspondence with her, and any proof of payment that she might have so you are organized if you have to go to court.

Dear Melissa,

As of March 6, 2018 I have worked 92 hours for you babysitting for your daughter, Melanie. When you hired me, we agreed you would pay me $____ per hour, but to date you have paid me for none of the hours I have worked. As of today, there is a balance due $__________.

I cannot continue to work without being paid. I was understanding about the position you said you were in financially but I now feel that I am being taken advantage of. Please let me know when I can pick up my check.

When you pay me (in full) i will be happy to continue babysitting for you, with the understanding that I will expect to be paid the same day I babysit.

Thank you,
OP

Make sure you keep any written messages from her, acknowledging that she has not paid you for your ninety-two hours.

Tangible evidence will make it much easier to sue her in small claims court should it come to that.

And do NOT, babysit for this hustler ever!!

I don't know how your employer files her taxes but I filed mine electronically on a Sat night and the money was in my account in six business days. Tell her you have bills to pay and cannot babysit until she pays up. It's interesting she's getting mad. She seems to have an entitled attitude.

Oh wow...I understand what the mom is probably thinking. She’s probably thinking she’ll just have you work and work and then when she gets her return, she’ll just pay you in a huge chunk for all the hours she owes you.

The problem with that is, once the time comes, she might try to flat out rip you off by maybe saying you didn’t work all the hours you’re saying you did. She could also possibly try to tug at your heartstrings by saying something like, “Hey I realy need this money for such and such thing. Would you mind if I just paid you half (or whatever) and gave you the rest at a later time?”

As of March 6, 2018 I have worked 68 hours for you babysitting for your daughter, Melanie. When you hired me, we agreed you would pay me $____ per hour, and so as of today, you owe me $__________. Since December you have been saying you will pay me when you get your income tax return. I can not work for you anymore until I get paid for hours already worked. If I am not paid by March 30th in full, you will leave me no option but to take you to small claims court, where a judgment will be found in my favor, and if you can not pay me immediately, your wages will be garnished. I look forward to resolving this outside of court before the end of the month.

Thank you,

And OP, you're an idiot. Do not EVER work for someone who does not pay you again. You have nobody to blame but yourself.

Op here. I know I am so stupid to do this. I am too nice sometimes!

You need to stop watching her child immediately. You're a kind person, and this woman is taking advantage. Stop it right now. The email PP wrote for you is perfect.

Cut your losses now. She either pays you for all past gigs or you do not sit until you are paid in full--which will probably be never. On the off chance that she pays you, in future, she pays in advance.

My employer is a single mom. I babysit her 7 year old daughter on the weekends. She has not paid me since January or maybe even late December because she's waiting for her income tax return. She's a single mom who works at a restaurant. I know she doesn't have a lot of extra money but I am getting so fed up with this situation. I asked her last week if she can pay me. She said she hasn't received the income tax return. Now she's asking me last minute to work all day Saturday and Sunday. I have no motivation to work because I don't know when I will get paid. I think I tell her I was available March 17-18 weekend. I told her today I can't and she's getting mad. Can anyone help me with writing a message to this mom? I feel like running away and never babysitting for this family again. That would mean all my weekends since December I have basically babysit free though!
