2017 threshold is ~$4500. That means if you come in the year for 5 months or more, you will owe.

Why would they even owe any money? Aren't they below the threshold?

She is lazy. LCC does not have to give 'tax advice'. She has to tell APs to file their taxes by a certain date, using a certain form, etc. I think our LCC hold a meeting where she prints out the form and goes through the form fields and explains what they mean and what people have to fill.

What kind of 'tax advice' could she possibly be giving to someone making 10k a year that would be breaking some agency rule??!!

This is something that I think is the agency/LCC job to communicate and assist AP! I feel like we pay enough to the agency to let them deal with this!

I might be a bad host mom, but I did not get involved in any of my au pairs' taxes. I know that my LCC hosts a meeting each year, which my APs have attended, that gives them all the info they need about filling their taxes. In our case, because of the arrival and departure dates, they only have to file the year after they leave our home, so it's up to them to take care of it.

I would ask your LCC what she has shared with AP about taxes, tell AP you are there if she needs help, but the rest is up to her. You are not her mom.

Untrue.
Maybe for some visas, but not a tourist one.

Well duh. I already knew that

Our LCC estimates around $600 on a full year stipend. She tells the APs this at her initial meeting with them so there is no surprise.

She can pay them even once in her home country

Yes but I think all that would happen if she ever returned is she would need to pay the taxes. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this?

Silly chance to take over not much money if she ever wants to return and work in the USA!

Our AP is debating whether to pay her taxes. She will return home in August. She thinks the decision should be based on whether she will work in the U.S. or not in the future.

Does anyone have any experiences with not-paying taxes? Are all your AP's paying?
