Don't take this job OP.

You can't be in a home all day when you feel uncomfortable. And the employers shouldn't be hiring someone who has a phobia about dogs.

it's a bad fit before you've even walked in the door. Just keep looking for something that will be more comfortable with you.

I’m MB with a medium sized , non aggressive but skittish dog with a loud bark. Our nanny downplayed her fear of dogs during the interview and We really liked her otherwise so we just went with it. To echo PP dogs can smell fear and our dog had never warmed to the nanny and vise versa. It’s a really annoying extra thing to deal with ( remembering to lock the dog up etc). I will never hire someone who has a fear of dogs again it just adds undue stress. Don’t take the job.

Would they be willing to get someone to come every day for a couple of weeks to help you get used to the dog? I would imagine this would be either a dog trainer whose specialty is working with fearful family members, or a psychologist of some kind.

That's something I'd be willing to do to help my dog avoid staying in the guest house if my nanny was fearful but willing to try.

Thanks for all helpful information. You guys are blessing. You always helped me. The job is more house manager then nanny . I have to cook, feed teen age boys , earnds, laundry , drive kids to activities etc...
I talked with them about my fear of large dogs.
They understand me and ready to keep the dog into guest house during my shift.
But, I don’t feel good about that. I don’t want just because of my phobia the poor animal stay in guesthouse all day long.
I am thinking I have to accept the position and see how it’s goes. When I saw the dog it was very calm . He went to other room when the boys called him.
Thanks again

I also have a fear of large dogs as well.

I am an animal person, but grew up w/small dogs and now have two cats.

There is something about large dogs that scare me.
Like their bark sounds so much louder (& intense!) than a smaller one.
Plus I tend to get really afraid when they stand up on their hind legs, I feel as if they will attack me.

Have you spoken to your new bosses about your fears?
Perhaps they can work it out where their dog is kept out in the yard or another part of the house during your shift.

If they can or will not make any accomodations to make you more comfortable, then I would let them know that unfortunately you don’t think you + them will be a suitable match and then continue on your job search.

Skip this job because you will always have some fear of this dog no matter how friendly dog is. Animals smell fear.

You can tell them of your problem and if they really want you they can find a solution. I have a friend who had a professional dog sitter take her dog during the day because her mother's caretaker was afraid of her dog.

I would skip this job, OP. You will have enough responsibility caring for and teaching the child without also trying to overcome a phobia. Plus you have no idea how much your phobia could effect you (you could freeze and not go get a crying baby because the dog is in your way).

However, in your free time, I definitely suggest seeing a therapist and getting over your fear on your own time. Big dogs are often more gentle and calm than the little biting and yapping dogs.

I am a dog lover, I would say if this dog is calm them take the job. If he is hyper and going to he jumping on you all the time, this will not help your fear and I would skip it. Be honest with the family.

Skip this job. Or if they love you that much they can send the dog to daycare.

Hi ,
I am not comfortable around large dogs. I just got a job offer. I am interested to accept the position but I am not comfortable around large dogs. They have one. I love animals I have three cats. My friend has two small dogs I love them . I want to come off from my phobia that I have with dogs.
I am thinking this is good opportunity to come off from this fear. But at same time I am not comfortable.
I have this issue for long time . when I was eight years old I saw a dog bite my neighbor. He went through painful treatment.
Any one who went through similar situation ? Any advice.

Thanks
