You're so right! No adult has ever gotten pertussis or the flu!
So explain to me again why I can make CPR a precondition for the job, but not the vaccines?

Frankly, I would assume any nanny who didn't see the importance of both Tdap and the flu vaccine with a young infant was not someone who was going to be particularly interested in evidence-based child care. I don't need a PhD in child development, but I would want someone who actually believes babies should be on their backs in an empty crib, and will religiously follow the car seat rules, for example, not someone who thinks all the fears are overblown.

You put it in as a requirement for the job. You can ask for proof just like you would for CPR certification when you hire them.

I required it for the nanny I hired the year my son was born (Tdap and flu). I also paid for it, and gave her the time to go get it in the middle of the day. I don't think either of those are necessary when you're hiring someone new (though paying for it if her insurance doesn't cover it is a nice thing to do), but I didn't require it to be done before she started b/c the baby wasn't born yet and I wasn't as concerned about the older kids.

It was part of the job description, interview, and contract, though.

Most people who work with babies don't have a problem with it. Those who do just won't take your job.

MB here. This is something you would ideally discuss when you hire. Assuming you didn’t, yes, you can and should bring it up now but if she declines you need to decide whether you will keep her on. Personally I would not hire a nanny who declined these vaccinations. Also you need to reimburse her for the shots if she now goes to get them.

Is there a way to ask about a nanny's vaccinations? With the horrid flew season, I don't want someone caring for my infant who hasn't gotten the flu shot (I know the effectiveness this year leaves something to be desired, but still), or someone who hasn't gotten the pertussis vaccination for that matter.
