I am a nanny.

I say thank you to my employers sometimes. I tell them I appreciate them, or that I admire some aspect of their parenting skills or household organization, etc. 75 percent of the time I get a compliment back.

We have a few part time nannies because I work weird hours. I tell each of them everyday how much we need them and appreciate them. Without them my work life is not possible. I thought everyone appreciated their nannies until one by one, mine made comments about how we have been their best bosses, we are their angels and how special we were. It makes me sad to think that these amazing ladies who raise our children and have the hard job, compared to my day job, go unappreciated. What is wrong with people?!? Show a little gratitude, it goes a long way.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting. I hope my employers see this thread. Lately one of them doesn't even acknowledge my arrival or departure. Been there five years. Is this the infamous love-hate relationship mothers sometimes develop toward the nanny? "I love how she cares for my children, but I hate that it's her and not me."? Why take it out on me? A bit of a vent, but thank you again.

Sad for those children, but totally true.

Don't go above and beyond. Stick to your contract and job description.

This and find another job/family that will appreciate you.

PS. are you the nanny that got into the car accident and your MB didn't ask how you're feeling?

I was FLOORED when they told me they toured daycares and reviewed a few other nanny resumes and just cannot picture their lives without me. They said I am better at my job than they are at theirs and would gladly welcome my baby into their home with open arms if I will stay on with them. I still cannot believe it.

This makes my day!!
I just want to hug you and them.
Congratulations to you all for being good people.

Their children are the luckiest to have parents (and a nanny!) who really love them. Every child should be so fortunate.

I worked for one couple like that in my career and it is horrible. It just erodes you. In my case, the mother was particularly nasty and ungrateful but zi figured it out - anytime her son would cry for me when so was leaving or doing anything that looked like he was favoring me, she would do or say something critical about my job performance - like I was folding the baby's socks wrong. Seriously it was like clockwork.

My employers are extremely appreciative and I am very grateful for that. In the two years I have worked for them, I have never once left the house at night without a thank you and am always given credit for the things I teach their child. I am staying with my charge this week while they are in Europe for a big conference and they left me a note saying how nothing is possible without me.

My previous employers were not like this at all. All I ever heard from them was minor offenses that I did wrong (example: once - just once there was a tiny bit of dried formula in the tread of a bottle cap and I was told by both of them - the MB twice - to be more careful). It wears on your soul.

Find better employers, OP.
