I agree with giving them a month but not much more if you need the job. But don’t “prime” it. That makes it obvious that you knew in advance and didn’t tell them.

Stop doing this. Coming up with excuses, especially bogus ones, just invites people to try to help you solve the problem, and leads to hurt feelings when they realize you were just using the problem as an excuse.

Just say you've decided to move. And if you don't want to move, just say that you've loved working for them, but you need to move on. Period. You might lose the reference if she's angry in that case, though.

I’d give her a months notice if you can afford to (ie if she fires you or replaces you sooner can you still pay your bills?)

Are you thinking that you would have your last day of work a week or two before moving? Are you sure that nothing the family can do would make you change your mind? So if they gave you a raise you wouldn't stay, right? Because you should be clear on that going in.

Let's assume nothing they'll throw at you to sweeten the pot would make you stay, yes?

Here's a script:

Hi Jane, this is a really difficult decision, but I've decided that at the end of April I'm going to move out of town, so I'm giving you my two weeks notice today." Then let her freak out and say whatever. Whatever she says just keep saying "I've made the decision to move; I'll miss you all, too." And other variations of that. If you want to, let her beg you for a month's notice and let her "talk you into" giving three weeks notice. Be prepared to be let go the day you give notice though.

I would not give too much notice. 1 month is good

Give her two weeks notice because she will fire you immediately.

Let her know that your lease is expiring in a few months & that you will be moving.

That’s the perfect reason or excuse.

But let her know really soon as she will need plenty of time to find a Nanny as awesome as you are!

My apartment lease is up in a few months, and I plan on moving out of town to start fresh, but idk how to tell MB, she is very sensitive and clingy, and always tells me how hard it would be to replace me, because I’m a very hard worker when it comes to helping with her children, and she doesn’t want to lose me.
