I am a nanny in my 40's who would not wear these t-shirts but I did think it funny. I am not sure it is worth the potential backlash to make this an issue mostly as you stated that all else is going well. On the other hand, if it does bother you, then it needs to be addressed, otherwise resentment will build up and may be transferred to other simple matters.

But you are not super easy going as you seem to think as this would not be an issue that you need a public forum feedback on

Actually, yes.

I have no issue giving her a $250 gift card to Old Navy or wherever she prefers to buy clothes.

OP you're getting some shade and I think I know why. Maybe you're too controlling. But I also think you are entitled to your feelings or better yet, your intuition. In all honesty no matter what her rights are I think it shows bad judgement on her part to wear message T shirts to a nanny job. Just my two cents.

It’s a tough one. There are lots of women who are experienced career nannies but not really “professional” nannies in the sense of taking a lot of pride in their work, understanding how to present themselves professionally, networking etc. She will likely view it as high-maintenance of you to request this change, so think through how big a deal it really is and what exactly you want your policy to be and also WHY it bothers you. If you do decide to bring it up, you want to be clear enough that you don’t need to talk about it again.

Seems like you hired a young and immature nanny.

She’s in her mid 50s and has three adult children.

She’s also a devout Catholic which makes these shirts a little more confusing.

You're NOT "really super easy going."

You should talk to her. "Jeannie, although we don't expect you to be in khakis and a french blue button down blouse, we would like it if your clothes were a smidge more formal than they are. An Old Navy t-shirt is fine. But wearing a shirt to your job joking about not wanting to be at your job can come across as passive-aggressive. Would you please think about this? I know this is a delicate subject and will understand if you'd like to take the weekend to think about it before responding. We think you're wonderful with Little Jimmy."

Talk to her about it. As a nanny, I find this ridiculously unprofessional and childish. You will be doing her a favor in setting her straight. Novelty t-shirts have no place in work.

Within a year, if she's still with you, you say something like "Jeannie, would you mind leaving the funny shirts at home. I don't want Jimmy's first words he learns to be "stupid" or "Fudd off" !" Be lighthearted about it but make the relevant point.

I wouldn't worry about it until then though, especially if she's otherwise great.

That's a tough spot to be in op. Those shirts would upset me. I don't know what if anything I would say however

It's not like your kid can read them. Unless they are really inappropriate (like, include profanity), I probably wouldn't say anything.

We’ve had our nanny for over three months now and she’s amazing. She’s very experienced and comes with great references. She works magic with my six month old and we really appreciate how much she loves and cares for DD.

The only issue we have is that 4 out of 5 days a week she shows up on t-shirts that seem to have come from Spencer’s.

Featuring,

“Sorry I’m late, I didn’t want to come”

“Coffee won’t do, this sounds like a job for alcohol!”

“I’m not sarcastic, I’m just allergic to stupid people.”

And

A t-shirt with a picture of Elmer Fudd saying, “Oh, Fudd off!”

I’m really super easy going but this kind of bothers me. Would you say something?
