Some little ones want to cuddle for a bit when they first wake up. My recommendation is to cuddle with him and for 10-20 minutes after he wakes up. If he is still fussy after post-nap cuddles, then feed him and give him something to drink. If he is still fussy after that, he might be bored and needs a change of scenery. Get outside and go for a walk. Turn on music and dance with him.

My boy/girl twins were still taking 2 naps at 18 months but dropped to one by 22 mths. My son would occasionally do random head banging things. 6-7 pm was always (and often still is) the fussiest hour.

It all sounds normal to me OP. The child will probably drop one nap within a couple of months, and the parents may have to adapt to not getting the morning nap, but no great harm is being done.

At 18 months, the kid probably should be taking one nap, but I disagree that it has to be in the afternoon. My DD was napping in the afternoon at that age, but I also know kids at that age who were napping around 10-12pm. Every kid has a different rhythm. My friend's son is almost 2.5 so much older than your charge and often nods off around 10 or 11 because he's so tired. Why do the parents insist on an afternoon nap? Maybe he should get quiet time in the afternoon instead of a short nap.

If your charge is 18 months, he should only need about 1 nap during the day either from 11:00-3 pm or 12:00-4 pm or whenever they wake up before that. I personally prefer napping toddlers from 12:00-4pm because that gives them enough energy for the rest of the evening. The behavior that you described is consistent with sleepiness in toddlers so talk to the parents to adjust it or just quit. No nanny should be suffering because of the ignorance of the parents.

Op here, thanks for all your replies. I talked with them few times that he need only one nap during day . They have to do many things in the morning that’s why they give him nap in morning. Afternoon nap are very important for brain development. They just ignored when I try to talk with them about issue

If he is 18 mos he should only need one nap a day. They should start transitioning him later in the morning so it moves to an early afternoon nap.

He’s probably angry that he is getting only a short nap. How long is his afternoon nap? Typically at this age, he should have 1 long nap in the afternoon (2-3 hrs) and that it. 2 naps at 18 months is crazy.

Makes no difference if it is a boy or a girl. Talk to the parents about his behavior and mood. Banging his head on the floor is not normal behavior and "fussy" is a term used for newborns and not 18 month old toddlers.

Mother here, former nanny. Kids in general are fussy at that time of day, "witching hour." He may need to drop that first nap soon so that his second nap is better. The parents shouldn't have him nap so long in the morning at that age.
