You need to show that you have the liquid cash to pay their entire tuition for all years of the degree program, at the international student rate. It’s going to be in the neighborhood of $30k-$50k.

The amount needed for 1 year was $28k and that was 20 years ago. Sponsor has to show they make that much and more.
All students I know ended up working outside of school. None of the sponsors I know were on the hook for the education bill. They didn't even keep contact with the student or know what happened to them. Some students just left the school or the country if they couldn't pay.

I came to the USA on a student visa. Same process applies to APs. My dad has to show that he had enough money in the back and had to get a letter from his employer to prove that he could support me while I was studying in the USA. Short of that, someone else would have to prove that.

While I was here (and still am, I ended up switching to a TN, then a H1B and then got an employer sponsor green card, and am now a citizen), I was only able to work at school. I was a lab assistant in the computer lab in exchange for 1/2 my tuition.

Engaging yourself into a contract saying that you will 'support' this person is a big deal IMO. And breaking the law by having her work in illegal as people stated above. I have no doubt that some APs are amazing (we have had many of those), but it's ok to let go. You can offer a great opportunity to another wonderful girl to have the same experience next year. And it is not your responsibility to offer an American education, or path to stay here indefinitely (which is most likely what this is about).

IF they do so, they mutually agree to violate the visa rules. Sometimes it is hard to follow the letter of the law. I used to work with international students with F1 visas who mostly all had jobs in violation of their visas. They needed to work to fudn their living expenses, but it did violate the terms of the visas.

Sponsorship means sponsor is required to cover any educational expenses that the student cannot afford. You are on the hook to pay if the student cannot or does not pay it.

Either student has to prove she has her own money to pay or need to find a sponsor who can prove having enough money and agree to be legal held responsible if student doesn't pay.

They have to prove they have the funds to support their academic pursuits and living expenses without working. (Work study type jobs on campus are usually ok.) IF you sponsor, you promise to support the student.

Depending on the country they come from, but quite easy as long as they have the money or a "sponsor".
