I know how to be a team player and also set boundaries. I am specifically asking about the financial aspect of the trip to ensure that it is worth my while to go.

I charge 50% my normal rate for overnights between 7pm-7am. So for 24 hrs I would charge for 18 hrs.
Ask about food and transportation. If they are expecting you to eat all meals with the family and you are pretty much stuck in a beach house or cabin by a lake or ski chateau, them that is basically working 24/7. If they plan to give you a reasonable per diem and there are a decent number of restaurants/local sights within walking/public transportation distance (AND open during your off hours) then I would tend to charge less.

You should have been paid for every second you were away on their behalf. Including your driving time.

I went on a long weekend with a family once. I drove myself and got paid travel time, then I got paid for the hours I worked.
I got time off and did not get paid for that time.
It was still worthwhile.

1. Doesn't matter - you are still paid for travel time.
2. Probably sleep with the kids
3. Paid for all hours away with family - hopefully have a flat travel day rate

Come up with a Travel Rate for all or part of ever day. Yes, you are to be paid for your flight time regardless of whether or not the children are with you. Be prepared to work all 24 hours of the day.
