Personally, I think a small amount of money and a gift related to her hobby is great. Including a picture of the kid(s) in the card is always nice too. I like getting those and putting them on my fridge or hanging them with my cards which I leave up all year until the next ones roll in. Last year I got one of the family with Santa which was fun.
You have never been given a week's pay as a Christmas/Year End bonus? I am honestly surprised. It is pretty standard. I had one very wealthy family that gave two weeks bonus.
