I usually don't... this was one of the rare times I had and event scheduled that I really wanted to attend and it was on a work day. Plus, my schedule is insane fepenending on NF schedule. Sometimes I'm with the kiddos 7 days a week for a month. I want to be able to have my own life at some point.

The one last thing you could try is to ask her if there is an alternative plan you could implement when you absolutely, positively have to leave. Is there a maid who could take over until they get home? A neighbor? A grandparent? If they say "no" to this, then you either half to give up the idea of after-work plans or quit.
