My boss, who comes from real money, told me her family paid her nanny's rent until that nanny died, and all funeral costs.

Does nanny know she is leaving yet?

One of my friends' former employers continued payroll for the number of weeks to equal the number of years she had worked. They said it was easy for them to continue that, but that they would not have been able to give her a check with the lump sum. For what it's worth, she worked for them for 12 years.

If you can afford it, I would give her her a months severance afte taxes. I would also give her a small gift from the kids.

Pp, it's called severance, and other jobs do give it, after
long term employment.

Other types of jobs do not usually give out thousands of dollars once the employee gives notice.

Some of these responses are hilarious.

OP, I'd give her whatever you think is appropriate and affordable. You have already done a lot (particularly helping her find the next job) so that's great.

I think I would probably give two weeks of pay (plus vacation accrual payout).

After nine years you should give her a $1000 payment per year for life.

Six months pay, tax free.

That's awesome!

I would be thrilled too!

That amount is enough to buy a used car or take a little vacation.

We've had a wonderful nanny for 9 years. She is leaving us because our youngest child just started kindergarten. We helped her find a new position that starts right after ours ends in a few weeks. We've gotten the nanny something personal from us (nice earrings), but think a cash bonus is appropriate too given her commitment to our family. What is the right amount, or the right range? Thanks.
