I totally get the way that you feel but in this scenario, I would advise that you put yourself first. Am sure your current employer would feel the same way if they were in your shoes. But would regardless let go of you because the need isn't there anymore. Just remember this, you're not leaving to be mean but you are leaving because you need to survive, you have bills, and goals. And not all parents turn hostile when you drop the "2 weeks notice" news. One thing I did before that worked was I emailed ahead of time telling my bosses that I needed to talk to them. That way I knew there was no way out, once they came home, I had to tell them "why" I needed to talk. It'll be easy. You're so kind hearted!! Go You!!

If you can't afford to live on a part-time job, I don't see you have an option. Explain the situation to your current employer and ask to babysit your current charge whenever possible.

I actually don't charge my former employers anything for picking up my former change from school once a week. This way they have nothing over me and actually appreciate the free care. And I get to hang out with the little guy who is my joy!

For what it is worth, my current job - that I took after the above mentioned little guy started preschool - is the best job I have ever had! I adore my current employers and their child is the love of my life. I never thought it would happen but I am much happier in my new job than I was in my former job even though I still love my former charge.

+1. I just posted with this exact scenario. I gave 4 weeks but I'm still not allowed to see the kids

It's always hard to quit. The more notice you give the better, but once you give notice, be prepared for the shit to hit the fan. Just because they are nice people doesn't mean you will still be able to see their kid, maybe ever again. Parents can have crazy reactions. I took a FT temporary job that will turn into a FT PT job. I started interviewing for FT because I wasn't sure I could find a PT job to work the other days of the week. I accepted a job with a family I liked ( not loved) with good pay. I have go give two weeks notice on Monday and I'm finding it difficult. I really love his job, my employers, and the baby. The baby is incredibly sweet and we have developed a good bond. The other family is really an unknown in terms of baby temperament and if it's really a good fit. I thought it would be easy to quit but I'm having such a hard time. I've left jobs before with an issue but it's just really hard with this one. Anyone ever have a job you had to quit but didn't want to? I know I will still see the baby once in a while but that's it.
