I'm still unclear on if OP is staying past her contracted end time, or if the parents are getting home early.

If she's staying late, she should say, "Bye!" and leave.

If they're getting home early, she should leave any cleaning up for those last few kid-free minutes, and be available to take a kid if necessary.

Thank you so much for saying this, pp. I had a nanny who would stay well past her end time. I eventually started doing things like making dinner and helping older kids with homework hoping she would get the hint. Twice she actually stayed and ate dinner with us. I eventually learned that I needed to tell her that she was done for the day and shoo her out the door. I found it so uncomfortable.

I usually give the parents time to get in the door and settle in, tell them anything I think they need to know about the day, and then say see you tomorrow. You just have to move past the awkward family moment and stsrt gathering your things and when they look up say bye..

PP, it isn't always that easy when your charge is talking to their parents and they are having as I said 'A family moment'. It's hard to get a word in and disturb the interaction.

I can relate. The worst is when MB starts making dinner and is still talking to me, like hello I want to go home and cook my dinner too. My old NF would always say "ok time to say bye to larla" and close the door behind me etc.

My MB and DB always start chatting to their DD and looking at what she has been doing and they never excuse me. I find it incredibly awkward and try and make a move to leave but they don't seem to get it. I am not part of their family and am really aware of that. It makes me feel really embarrassed that I am almost intruding on their family time.
Can any nannies relate?
