Actually, there is an important principle here. She could choose to buy the sandals herself, but I'm willing to bet this comes up again. OP will again get a "gift" from MB that MB thinks is equivalent to cash, when it is not. It might be for the next thing the dog destroys, or for a promised Christmas bonus. I would address it now, when it's a relatively small item.

Just buy the new one! Are you that poor?

I'm going to go out on limb here and say that MB gave you a pair of wedges that have been sitting in her closet unworn for some time. She thought they were an upgrade from your sandals, and free to her, so, yay for her.

I think you're going to have to have this awkward conversation: "MB, thank you so much for the wedges. It was a lovely thought to give me the designer shoes to replace my old ones. The problem is that I still need to replace my sandals, because I need shoes I can wear to work everyday. This part is awkward for me, but I have to tell you that while they weren't expensive, they were for me. I really need the money to replace the sandals I had. Here are the wedges; I hope you can return them." And then hand her back the bag.

This is a good idea. I always buy sandals a half size larger so my toes don't hang over edge.

Not worth the bad/hurt feelings, OP. Replace your own sandals.

Am I the only one who feels sorry for the poor dog who knows people are home but is shut away in the back of the house all day? I dont know why some people get dogs.

I'm betting you're underpaid, OP. Am I right?

Definitely try to sell them on Facebook marketplace or Offer up or tradesy or next door. Hopefully you can get enough money from the sale to buy another pair of the kind of sandal you prefer without much hassle. Try to list them for sale in the next day or two, and see what kind of response you get.

After 5 or 6 days, if you're not having luck selling them, then consider talking to MB. Say something like "it was so sweet of you to get me the Michael Kors sandals; they are super cute. The thing is, I've never worn wedges before, and I've tried to wear them (just around my house a little, never outside), and unfortunately they're just not comfortable for me. Do you still have the receipt? I'd love to try to exchange them for a pair that might be more comfortable for me."

Even if she doesn't have the receipt, the store may be able to look up the order if she paid via credit card. Even if you can't return them, MB may realize her mistake and still give you money towards a pair of the sandals you prefer.

Of course, that's going to be an awkward talk. If she's a reasonable person in general it's probably nothing to worry about, but if she isn't, or is prone to taking things personally, or being dramatic, then it may not be worth bringing up.

OP here. Sorry for the confusion- when I said Michael Kors bag, I meant that the shoes were in an MK shopping bag, not a purse. If she had given me a purse in addition to the shoes, I'd feel even more terrible!

There was no receipt in the bag and from what I've read online, MK is funny about returns and exchanges without a receipt. I don't feel comfortable asking MB for the receipt- I don't particularly want to know how much she paid for them. I guess I could try and sell them. It's a little more trouble than I'd like to go through, but oh well. Thanks for the advice everyone. What a bizarre situation.

I wouldn't ask her for anything else.

I would just sell the Michael Kors (!!!) bag + wedges, then purchase myself a brand-new pair of daily sandals.

If she asks you later on how do you like the wedges + bag, just tell her you usually use them on special occasions, etc.

I highly doubt that after what her dog did to your sandals, that she would expect you to bring a designer bag into your her home!
Plus what Nanny would come to work in wedged....??!

Plus since your sandals weren't so pricey, you may have enough $$ left over for a mani/pedi.

Win win.

Forget it, OP. For the sake of peace in your job, buy your own sandals and DO NOT ASK YOUR MB TO REIMBURSE YOU. That would be horribly impolite and will cause very bad blood. You should also wear the ugly sandals occasionally. Seriously, do not be an ass and ask her to reimburse you for your inexpensive sandals after her expensive gift.

That stinks. Try to exchange them. Not worth creating hard feelings over when she tried to remedy the situation.
Keep everything away from that dog. (pets are like kids that never grow up- ugh)

I would just try to return the shoes to a store. Or maybe try to resell them. It's not worth making it a thing with your MB. She sounds kind hearted, if maybe a little clueless. You're lucky she took responsibility for her mistake, and cares enough to try to make it right.

My NF has a dog that they keep secluded to the back part of the house near the garage and laundry room during the day. There is a baby gate that keeps him from getting into the kitchen, living room, etc. He's a nice dog and house trained, but likes to chew.

So yesterday, my charge and I were upstairs playing in her room for about an hour. We come downstairs and the dog has somehow gotten through the gate (this has never happened before, it was early in the morning so maybe MB didn't latch the gate well) and has chewed up one of my sandals basically to shreds. He chewed through the top straps, so even beyond cosmetic damage, they are physically unwearable. They aren't too terribly expensive, but they are my favorite pair and I wear them nearly everyday, so I'm pretty bummed.

MB comes home and is super apologetic, totally took the blame and said she probably didn't latch the gate good enough, and says she'll reimburse me. I let her know how much they were, no problems, and went home for the day. So today, I get there and MB was already gone for the day. She gets home this afternoon and excitedly hands me a Michael Kors (!!!) bag with a pair of WEDGES in it. My size and everything, but they don't even mildly resemble my sandals. I don't want to be an ass, but they aren't even my style and this isn't what we agreed upon. I thanked MB, it was a little awkward but she was so excited and thought I would love them. Now I'm out of my favorite daily shoes and have a new pair of wedges that I doubt I will ever even wear. I don't have another pair of sandals to wear daily. I have a family and a lot of bills, don't have a ton of extra money to buy shoes. Like I said, my sandals weren't crazy pricey, but it was a big investment for me and they would've lasted me for years.

Not sure what to do. MB was pretty clear that she would reimburse me, I didn't realize that meant she'd go shopping for me and bring back something completely different. I would feel so terribly ungrateful if I told her "hey, this isn't what I wanted.", but I also would really like her to follow through on reimbursing me for my shoes. What would you do? This is such a strange and unique situation, I really have no idea what to do.
