Nanny here.

I think it is really hard to expect a pay raise from your employers when you have just shown them you have plenty of money to blow by buying expensive gifts for their kids.

Getting something little for the kids, sure. Kids get totally excited about their birthdays and getting gifts, so their feelings would be hurt if you didn't get them something.

Wow, PP. That is just plain mean and ungrateful

No doubt she owns the money she is paid. But it's weird when she's just giving it back to me in the form of a gift for my child. Also, we're minimalists and I don't like having tons of crap or having to deal with returning/exchanging/regifting stuff people gave. It's just more work for me.

Our old nanny got my DD her favorite gift by far the Christmas she was just over 1. A baby doll she carried around with her everywhere for like a year.

I let her spend her money as she wishes on the children. It brings her joy.

Because gifts are supposed to flow down, not up, and in addition, it's my money I gave you that you're turning around and spending on my child. That's weird.

Mine went overboard on birthday and Christmas lresnets. I wish she didn't. I returned the favor and got nice presents for her grandchildren. But I wish she wouldn't bother and ace her and my money. A card or a little toy is fine but no $50 gifts.

NP: Because I don't want you to spend your money on my children.

I am a nanny. It's a lovely gesture.
I don't see why someone would be upset by it.

I think it is lovely when nanny buys my children gifts. And my children cherish the gifts from their nanny.
