My opinion on birthdays is that they are important to kids. Grownups, not so much. Unless it is a milestone birthday like age 20, 21, 30, 40, 50, etc.
I think a card sounds awesome. A card and a cake even more awesome. Might as well do candles and sing the song and eat some at your house since the kids will want all that fanfare. Nanny can take the rest of the cake home.
I am 58. I was embarrassed last year when my MB gave me a bonus check for my birthday, and relieved this year when she didn't bother. Two years from now when I hit 60, if my employers want to go all out for my birthday, that sounds great.
Maybe that is just me though.
It is nice to be thought of, just don't go bankrupt expressing the sentiment.
All birthdays are milestones. You made it through another year!
