Op, that's because babies most often have conditions and not much communicable disease because they haven't been in contact with germs for long. I'm close in age to you and do backup care with kids usually home sick from daycares or school and rarely catch anything. Of course I don't have asthma but if I was in your shoes, I would stay far away from jobs with that age group.

See a Doctor. Maybe you are immunocompromised?

Nonsense. As every parent knows when their kid first starts school, it generally takes about a year. Unless OP has an underlying condition, of course.

Nonsense to you right back. There are many viruses out there and you can always pick up a new bacterial infection from the kids.

You should get blood work done, exercise and eat healthy. If it's a bug more people should be catching it. Stop blaming the kids and try to see what's going on with you.

Exactly. Kids are out a lot when they first start school, then it tapers off. Of course, every time there's a new outbreak, if the disease has significantly changed, it's likely that OP will be out again.

OP, how do you keep from getting sick while working with infants and toddlers? Don't you go to the park, library, maybe classes? I've found that I'm more likely to get sick around toddlers than elementary age children.

Hang in there and see it through to a year. You will be amazed at how infrequently you are sick in the second year. You are building a strong immune system!

FWIW I disinfect surfaces and toys and wash my hands constantly!

I want to quit my current position working with elementary school age kids. For whatever reason, my immune system cannot handle it, despite being an otherwise healthy 26 year old. I've been with them since the beginning of the school year, and have caught every single thing they have gotten (bouts of strep, colds, impetigo, currently the flu). I am fine working with children that do not go to school. Should I give it more time or look for another position with infants? I never got sick once working with babies.
