Obviously, they must have a pretty good relationship. It was just interesting and was wondering what other people thought. The family callled to schedule an in-person, so we will see how that goes!

I am an MB and this question has been raised before by a potential nanny who did not have a good interview with the current nanny. I wrote then that it is common in my industry to have the current position holder interview the potential position holder and makes sense to me.

Should our nanny ever leave (I pray she never does!) I would absolutely have her interview potential nannies first.

I've had several families for whom previous or current nannies served as either references or filters. Personally, I wouldn't put much weight with a reference from a nanny who has only been with the family for 4 months, unless she worked for them previously. However, she could easily be a good filter, perhaps a better filter than a previous nanny if the family's situation has changed drastically in the last year. To me, any family who offers a nanny reference is seen as more responsible and more likely to treat me (and my position) with respect. I've also served as a reference thrice for a former employer, and I've given him feedback from the conversations.

Good luck OP for the in-person interview!

I think it shows that this potential family is decent considering their current Nanny doesn't have a bad word to say about them.

I think that's a positive (I'm an MB).

If my relationship w/ our nanny is strong enough to a) know that she's leaving and be so open about it and b) trust her to do the initial phone screening, then we have a pretty great relationship.

Whether it will be a good fit for you or not is a different question, but the current nanny and employer must have a pretty decent relationship.

Was it a good interview?

Is this a common occurrence? I was a little surprised. I've been a nanny for 6 years and has never happened to me before. I would just like to know if this is a "red flag" or even a positive thing? Thanks!
