As a parent who does preschool pickup w/ a baby in tow, and there's no carpool line so I have to go inside the school, Ive had to accept that the younger child's sleep schedule is disrupted. There are days when he gets maybe 2 minutes of a second nap in the car when I know he'd sleep for an hour given the opportunity. He's nearly one now, and I've seen him adjust, sometimes taking mammoth afternoon snoozes and orienting his nap towards the earlier (11/11:30) side.

What time does baby go to bed? I know late afternoon naps are great for breaking up the day and coordinating with the older kid's quiet time, but my kids would have happily taken the earlier nap. They woke up at 5/5:30 and were in bed for the night t 6:30/7.

I wonder why parents do this? It is not normal for kids to be up at 5:00 am loool. If I was a parent I would instruct my nanny to put my kids down at 1:00pm and wake up at 4:00pm. This way they can go to bed by 8:00-30 pm and sleep till 7:00-8 am. Us nannies when we come in the morning we like going to activities and park. Bothers me when kids are so sleepy at 11:00 am can't enjoy story time, play date, or park and lunch becomes a disaster!!!!! Going to sleep at 6:30-7:00pm is just too early!!!!

My kids put themselves on this schedule. One of the advantages of nanny care is that they can have the schedule that works best for them, not that works best for the grownups in their lives. You just move lunch around, or take the later class, or do the park later in the day. I don't get the problem.

I completely agree. We have a nanny so she can be on the kids schedule not the other way around. Mine is an early riser and goes to bed at 7pm. Sleeps 7-6:30. The clocks changed and I thigh shed go to bed later and wake up later. Nope. Stayed in the same hours. Thankfully my wonderful nanny gets this and adjusts. And they have activities and walks early am and lunch at 13 and nap by 12:30. And then they can get another walk/playground outing in the afternoon before wi get home from work.

PP who suggested not waking him. The issue isn't whether the nanny has a long break, it's whether the child sleeps enough.

I sure hope you are not serious and/or a nanny!

And how in the world would she get his jacket, winter gear if it happens to be cold, a fresh diaper, and into the stroller outside where it's probably way brighter than his room without him waking up? That's more than waking up for just a few seconds. No kid could sleep through that. Most kids, when woken up, are up for good. It's not typical for them to wake up for a few minutes then fall back asleep after all that.

I agree with 18:21. Early lunch, then put him down no later than 12. That gives him the leeway for at LEAST a 2 hour nap, and more if he needs it. Just be prepared with a snack when you all get home from pickup, as he'll likely be hungry.

op said that she would walk because she thought it would be longer. With a child in the car sleeping, it's not a big deal. And there's no reason to wake the child with a clean diaper or anything else if driving is possible.

Why in the world are you considering waking him up?! Make sure everything is ready to go during naptime, open the vehicle door, make sure the front door can be pushed gently aside with you toe, carry the child out and buckle in before closing and locking the front door. IF the toddler wakes up, it's for only a few seconds, and pick up line makes everything smooth while toddler finishes nap.

I do this at least once per week with a preschooler whose nap has to start later, but whose siblings have to be picked up at the normal time. In my case, I make sure the child's coat, hat and gloves (as appropriate), shoes, stuffed animal, book and water are all ready, but he invariably wakes up as I buckle him in, and sometimes he doesn't go back to sleep. When I've done this in the past with younger children, I've skipped the toy, book and water because they've never stayed awake more than 3 minutes after we are moving.

Do lunch at 11:10 and put him down around 11:50. Wake him up around 2:10 and he should be fine for the remainder of your shift. I would just beast mode through everything after nap to get out quick. Prepare stroller in advance put shoes socks and jacket right there too. Thank me later

Post 03/22/2017 17:56     Subject: Suggestions for big brother pick up with toddler naptime

I've been a nanny for many years but I've never been in this particular position before regarding pick ups. Big brother (age 5) will be starting kindergarten in the Fall and little brother will be 15 months old at that time. Kindergarten will end at 2:45 and MB has told me that big brother will need to be picked up promptly at that time. I've been a nanny for many years but every time I've done pickups with a toddler in tow it's either been an earlier preschool pick up (around noon), or a later pick up (for older kids with after school activities; around 4pm), so it's never been right in the middle of nap time.

I've worked with many, many toddlers in my career, and the schedule that has always worked best for the child, and which seems to be the case among other nannies and parents I know, is to have one afternoon nap, usually between 1:30-4pm. The last family I worked with had twins and they napped like clockwork every day from 2-4:15pm between 13 months and 3 years old. The family before that had a little girl who napped from 1:30-3:30 daily until she was 4. Currently, little brother takes 2 naps (he's 10 months), but he is a great sleeper, usually napping 3-4 hours per day, and of course in the next 4-6 months he'll be dropping the morning nap.

The preschool is a ten minute walk from the house (we could drive but with the traffic lights and dealing with parking or the pick up line I think that would take even longer). So we would have to leave the house by 2:35 at the absolute latest, which means between the diaper change, putting a jacket on the toddler and getting out the door I'd need to wake him up by 2:20. I could try to do lunch right at noon and put him down by 12:45 for nap, but even then he would barely be getting 90 mins of nap, and that's assuming he falls asleep right when I put him down (which isn't often the case for toddlers). Most young toddlers I've worked with usually took a nap of 2 hours or more, and were cranky if woken early.

Any advice or tips? Anyone BTDT? Thanks.
