AND define the severance and make it contingent on her working through the notice period. We all expect the best but it is best to plan for the worse. You don't want her getting a new gig and leaving you high and dry.

If you are giving months notice then severance isn't applicable, it's a parting gift you're talking about.
I think a week of pay per year of service is very generous and lovely, but it could really add up. In your shoes I might cap the cash gift at a month, and also give some kind of gift(s) from the kids, a wonderful recommendation of course, and an ending dinner or outing. I'd also schedule some fun social visits so everyone knows this is an evolution, not a full on goodbye.

We really don't need full-time childcare anymore though and recognize that she may not be interested or able to work for us on a part time basis. What is a fair proposed amount of severance - one week per year? What are other ways to recognize a nanny for all her great work?
