This. I would do it on a friday afternoon and if you can afford it, give as much at one week of severance. But also, in your next contract, have a one month trial period for exactly this eventuality.
Good for you for making the decision quickly. We hired a nanny a few months ago and have really been trying to make it work but in retrospect we just shouldn't have hired her. It gets much harder to manage (on all sides) the longer it goes on.
