Op here. I don't need three days off. I just need one. The little one doesn't sleep thru the night and MB gets up and gives her a bottle every night at around two and my charge goes right back to sleep. It is harder for me because I am not used to it and probably won't be able to get back to sleep.

Generally when I travel with a family, I keep the children in my room with me. It is the parents vacation and not mine. Also keep in mind that my traveling rate is $400 a day plus all expenses.

wow! I'm not a nanny, I just have a nanny-share but that sounds like a good deal! $4,000 plus you get all your expenses paid for a trip! Curious minds want to know....where are you traveling to? Even though it isn't YOUR trip, I imagine it will still be fun!

NP here.

If you travel for work, do you have to pay for it, or are all required costs covered? Are you expected to suck it up and not be paid, do you do the same amount of work, or are you paid extra because you are doing more?

This is why I hate traveling with families, but I'll do it for a reasonable fee. It's not fun for me. I'm with the kids 24 hours per day while we're gone, although a parent might take one to something, I have the rest. They sleep in my room, that way their parents can sleep and I can deal with any issues. Every single trip has had at least one child who caught a nasty stomach bug. I'm going to little child venues, not venues aimed at my interests, and while I'm happy to do it for them, it's not MY vacation.

Yet I've had parents who wanted me to pay for my own lodging, flights, a minivan rental for the kids and me to share (including car seats) and food. Those types of parents also don't want to pay the normal weekly salary, let alone a daily rate for travel.

At this point in my career, I don't travel unless everything is covered, including $30+/day for my food, and I'm paid a minimum of $300 for the day. Yes, it means I don't along on many vacations anymore, but that's fine with me. I stay home, go in and do a little organizing, the family spends time with their kids, and I get my normal salary for the week.

ALL costs need to be covered by the employer - all food, lodging and related travel expense. Further, you need to be compensated for the additional hours and not being in your own home.

I cannot imagine any employer expecting you to pay for lodging, flights and minivan rental!!!

Parents who employ nannies need to remember that your vacation is NOT the nanny's vacation!!!

Yikes, that sounds pretty awful!! I cannot imagine a parent asking the nanny to pay for herself while working! As a parent, I don't WANT my nanny coming along just as I don't want her living in my home. That's my family time, our personal time together. If I ever had the money to bring along my nanny (I won't), I would pay for all her expenses and request most evenings she be available, some help if there's a long-flight (not all the work but help), and maybe a couple of daytime activities but beyond that I would let her have free time to enjoy herself too. A happy nanny means for a happy family! I wouldn't want the person caring for my child to be overwhelmed, miserable, and exhausted. I would want her to take nice breaks and if we were in a beautiful place for her to enjoy herself.

I just can't imagine having your nanny care for the kids the ENTIRE vacation...why even bring the kids along if you don't want them there? Maybe it's a cultural thing for me as that's not something my family did.

I'm taking a vacation this summer and part of it we will be camping in our family tent and will be 10 min. away from a YMCA camp. You pay for a family pass of about $240 for the whole week which includes all activities and you can also put your kiddos in camp in the mornings for $45 extra a week. There is a full-day camp option for older kids but I want to do stuff with my child myself! They are having fun, mom and dad get a 3 hour break, and our nanny will have a week's paid vacation to do whatever she wants to do. Win-win!

THIS is a professional nanny, who is probably more than worth her pay. She's making the big bucks, but she's also working HARD for them.

The family should already have backup care in the first place in case a nanny were to call in etc.

The fact they had you work 10 days straight with no expectation of then giving you time off boggles the mind.

Yes you should ask for time off. How many days are you normally off a week?

You have PTO and You should take Three days off after such an arduous trip. It is not up to you to find replacement care. You were crazy to accept such a job to be on duty 24/7. Use the rest of your PTO to find a better job.

Good heavens. Of course you should request at least one day off.

Why aren't you using any of your PTO OP?

Post 02/23/2017 09:20     Subject: Requesting a day off AFTER travelling with family for their vacation

I know that things are hectic when a family with a small child comes home from an overseas trip. However, after ten days of 24 hour a day care for their 15 month old (who still wakes up once a night for a bottle), a late flight home and being away from my own home for ten days, I think I will need the next day off when we get back.

I have not taken any PTO yet (in 15 months) - but is this the wrong time to ask for a paid day off?

Thanks
