I agree on making the severance contingent upon working out her term and then give at least one month's notice. But really, you should be able to tell her now. Esp if you'd like to have her return as a date night sitter.

Make the severance contingent on her staying through the full period of time you need her.

It's a very very generous notice period and severance package OP. I hope she will extend you the same courtesy.

If she is as good as you say, she will carry on as well as she always has.

Two months of severance pay is really considerate on your part.

If you're leaving in late May, but she'll be employed through June, and then you are giving two MONTHS pay as severance at the end of June, I agree, let her know now. That is a very, very generous offer, and I'm sure she will appreciate it, especially for a part-time position. Be prepared for reference calls anytime between now and June, but otherwise, you should be fine, OP.

Tell her now. If she is as good as you say, she won't leave before her end date. Also, offering her severance as a bonus if she stays until the agreed upon end date won't hurt!

I decided to give notice to my boss this week that I'm going to leave in late May. I'll SAHM after that. Our nanny works PT for us and she's great. Been with us for almost 2 years. I'm planning on keeping her for an extra month after I leave my job (if she'll stay/assuming she doesn't have a new job), then 2 months severance. Does that seem fair?

My main question is how much notice to give? I don't want her to hear about me leaving through the grapevine, but I also worry about giving her so much notice and the "senioritis" effect. She's never given me a reason to doubt her work before.
