This got me a little teary. As a nanny, I guess that I am always a little nervous that I could get randomly told out of the blue that my time with the family is done. To hear that you have had a relationship with your former nanny that has lasted for decades is really sweet.

Exact opposite with DS. He hated daycare after being home with his nanny for 2 years and it made the transition so much harder on him. Plus he was sick constantly.

The whole process is really difficult from a nanny's perspective too. If your nanny is anything like me then she will want to still be involved in your little one's life in one way or another.

I agree that you need to first figure out:
1) what is the plan for keeping in touch with nanny (would she be up for a weekly skype call for a few months)?
2) what is the childcare plan when nanny leaves?

If you can tell your child who will be caring for them and when they will get to talk to old nanny it will help a lot to reassure DC.

She is leaving the country for grad school so not sure if she'll be around much longer after last day to meet again. I almost told her several times today.

Hopefully your daughter's nanny will remain in the area so that on her last day, Nanny can say "See you on Friday!" (Or whenever). This saved my son. He is devoted to his nanny and she to him. When he started school and aftercare, his nanny made it a priority to get her next job with one weekday off to pick up my son at school and spend the afternoon with him.

Our nanny has been with us for 4 years since our daughter was 3 months old. She is going to leave us soon to go back to school. My daughter loves her nanny so much and tells us she is her best friend and loves her more than anyone. She knows about the potential of her leaving us to further her education and always says she doesn't want her to do that and wants her to be her nanny forever. How would you break the news? We have about 1 month left with our current nanny.
