Why? Chinese do eat dogs.

If he said something random instead of repeating a racist stereotype, I might be inclined to agree with you. However, for him to choose that particular thing, that dogs are used in Chinese food, he must've heard it somewhere. At any rate, OP is going to speak with the nanny before doing anything.

Yes op, I'd be upset with the nanny, just like I would be upset if she told my kid that African Americans only eat fried chicken and watermelons. Not the same thing, but it's similar in that it's a racist, food related stereotype.

She's incredibly ignorant she believes this, not to mention racist. I wouldn't want her caring for my child.

I would defintely say something to her , but maybe ask her for her version of events first so youre not shooting from the hip not having both sides of the story.

She's not a vegetarian but I know she doesn't like Chinese food. Maybe it's because she thinks this is true. I'm totally guessing and I'll get the full story from her when we speak to her but I guess is she told him she doesn't like Chinese food and when he asked why this is what she said. She has a tendency to be overly honest with them and while I'm all for honesty I think this was unnecessary. And the picture was just over the top.

He's 6, not 2. He doesn't make things up so yes, I do believe what he said. If your 6 year old is making up stories about a walrus with purple tusks who talk to him you have big issues. My 3 year old might do that as a joke and if I asked "did that really happen?" she'd laugh and say no. My 6 year old won't even get out of his bed before he's allowed to because he doesn't ever want to do anything wrong. He's not making up stories about dogs and Chinese food.

To the PPs, our nanny has been with us a year and a half and has never given me a reason to question her judgement like this before. I'm not anxious to let her go since the children love her and we only need a nanny for another 6 months. I need a good way to explain why this wasn't appropriate though and why I don't want her telling him things like that.

Completely inappropriate. I would think twice before keeping her. You don't know what else she is saying when your not around. Red Flag

Or racist. What was the point of this, OP? Was she trying to scare him, teach him that he should never eat Chinese food? Was it a bad joke?

I'd get rid of her. Why would she tell a child that? Especially if you guys have a dog. Shows extremely poor judgment not to mention undermining parents.

No sure this is a fireable offense. In poor taste...yes. I'd talk to her about it and then let it go. He's going to hear a lot worse stuff as he gets older. This is a good chance for him to learn to come to you when he hears weird things and to learn to suss out fact from fiction.

Our nanny told our 6 yo DS that Chinese food is made from dog meat and also showed him pictures of how they cut the dog. DS now doesn't want us to ever eat Chinese food and is concerned someone could eat our family dog. Generally I thought she had good judgment but I seriously thought DH's head was going to explode when DS told us she showed him a picture.
