I would drop the rate a few dollars and offer 3 sock dayd and 3 days PTO, but they can be your choice. That means, if she gets Thanksgiving off you can choose the Friday after as her vacation day, etc. so it is as convenient as you can make it.

You should definitely do sick days simply because you otherwise will breed a lot of resentment every time she has to care for your sick kid potentially at her own cost.

$21 is a good rate but not so much that somebody can live off of 30 hrs per week, so she will need to be either babysitting or adding another regular job on her off days. So moving days around will still cost her one way or another. Dropping the rate by a dollar or two won't reduce atteactiveness as much as adding PTO/sick time will increase it.

-Fairfax Suburbs, One child, 1.5 years old.
-3 days a week/30 hours guaranteed, $21.00/hour
-Miles driven for child reimbursed
-Snow days, paid
-She agreed to work holidays such as president/vet day, but thanksgiving and other holidays will be off and paid
-No sick/pto leave, but she can make up hours
-No housekeeping...just clean up after child and child's laundry, etc...

That's reasonable given it is part time, 30 hours/week or $630/ week.

Is the rate before taxes or after taxes are taken out? If it's before then I think the rate is a little low for only 30 hours a week. But I second what everyone else has said about offering PTO or at least some sick days. If you don't, you're likely to run into two issues a lot. First, when nanny is sick and contagious, instead of her staying home and taking a sick day, you run the risk that she'll come to work anyways so as to not miss out on her pay, risking the chance that she'll give her illness to your child. Second, if nanny doesn't have any PTO or sick days to take in the event she becomes sick, she may resent having to come in and take care of your child when he/she is sick since she'd be risking getting sick from your child, for which she would then have to miss a day that you wouldn't compensate her for.

No, if the person has already been earning more (based on her abilities), she's likely to get a better offer before you know it. So make sure she's pleased with her overall compensation package.

Personally, with only 30 hours I would have to charge a higher rate to be able to afford my rent and bills. With 40 or more hours it would be a good rate.

Awesome well done. I would take it and m a nanny earning less than that with even less hours.

Regardless of if the no PTO is legal, it's your deal breaker. Your rate is on the high side but I am not about to take any job where I don't have the option of being sick (and making it up is BS, illness isn't a choice).

Drop your rate to $18-19 and offer PTO. If you want a professional you need to provide professional benefits. Otherwise, you will find yourself shuffling through nannies that take your job until they find something better.

Anonymous wrote:Which three days a week? If it's T/W/Th, then this sounds like a great package, even without the PTO. If it's M/W/F, I think she's going to quickly be annoyed that she never can have a long weekend unless it's a holiday. If you're saying that she can move the three days around, then that's probably ok.

However, I suspect that in practice she will schedule things for her days off (school, another job), and moving hours around will not be practical. Also, is it legal in VA to have NO pto at all?

I would honestly drop the rate a little and add at least a week of PTO. Don't forget that you're looking at raises in the coming years.

Hi OP here, thanks for your response. It's Weds/Thurs/Fri...but there's some flexibility with that if the nanny needs an off day since I have reliable backup care. I'm not really sure if having no PTO is legal...I'll have to look into that. Thanks again!
