Well, not to mention that you pay for ALL their food, it's customary to take them on vacation, and if you are anything like our family and have school aged kids, they often are working sub 20hrs a week.

We had a live in when the kids were little and she bought most her own food, paid for her own gym, and never went on vacation with us. We paid $500/wk.

I do not disagree with this, but having had both the live in and AP (as I posted earlier on this thread) a live in nanny is not the same as an AP who has the agency/infrastructure behind the service.
Personally, I am over the live in nanny or AP. We are currently doing the math on finding a non-live in nanny for about 35k a year, working maybe 30 hours a week max but reliable. Nothing is perfect, but dependability is worth every dollar when you find it.

we pay $15 an hour, and 1.5x overtime-- but we only use overtime when school is out. She has full access to a car.

Our nanny is technically a live-in I guess, but we have a completely separate apartment for her that we pay for and she comes by metro. We pay $500 a week. But we don't ask for all that many hours since I am around, but the times vary a lot.

Review some draft contracts as well - some live-ins will want 30 days minimum notice if you are letting them go. A lot of them either live out of the area or have no second place to go so you cannot throw them out like an AP who has an LCC and other options. We paid $500 a week but when kids got older went to an AP. Our nanny also used our car a ton - she drove to see her family on weekends like 400 miles round trip.

Yes ^^^ you do pay for every hour worked however you pay a lower rate since you are also providing 100% of her living & transportation expen$es as well.

10-15 is about average for a live in nanny. You must pay for every hour worked.

Unless the laws have changed, that depends on the state. In Maryland, overtime wasn't legally required last time I checked.

Actually Maryland is one of the few states that does require you to pay live in nannies over time at time and a 1/2 for anything over 40 hours per week. In Virginia you don't have to pay over time sadly.

Au Pairs are not the same as a nanny.

If you want a decent nanny that can work 50-60hrs a week, $16-18 is a good rate. May need to be higher because she isn't getting OT pay.

At least $800 a week.

Au Pairs have restricted hours they can work.

Nannies are childcare professionals, that commend a rate and benefits like any professional job.

I'm VA you must pay straight time for all hours. Of you are paying $13.00/hr and she works 60 hours a week then you pay her for 60 hours.

Au pair is $200/wk plus you pay the agency another $200/wk to provide an infrastructure, training, plane tickets, visa, health insurance, etc.

Nannies are apples, au pairs are dust bunnies! There is no comparison!

What is an average weekly pay for a live in Nanny who has room and board, and access to a car? I know an Au Pair is about $200/week.
Thanks
