We had a nanny for three years, she worked with my twins and a neighbor's child. We didn't ask her to do any household duties. We paid her $25 an hour. With three weeks vacation, seven sick days, and federal holidays off. Not a lot of nannies would work with three children at the same time. She seemed to enjoy working with all three children.

This subject comes up every once in a while here and the response is almost always overwhelmingly negative.

It's a difficult job but if you screen well you can find a great nanny. I'd personally look for someone who has twin/triplet/quadruplet experience. There are other nannies out there like myself that really like this type of job, you just have to search to find them.

There are a few logistical things that need to be worked out though. Transportation is a big one as not every nanny will have a car big enough or be willing to transport 3 children. Triple stroller is another one. I've used every triple on the market at one time or another. There is no perfect triple, so you have to research and decide what is the best choice for you.

The difference is that this is three sets of parents to work with, too. So, when an issue comes up with triplets (like when one needs to be held a lot more than the others), the parents can help make that call with the nanny. When it comes up in a three-infant share, all of the parents worry that their child will get the short end of the nanny's attention. That's also three employers the nanny has to deal with for pay, vacation coordination and any other HR-type stuff. It's so much more work that it would only be worth it for a high rate, but why would the families pay more than they'd have to for a more reasonable 2-baby share?

What is the range of rates for a nanny who cares for 3 infants?

I do think it's doable (and doesn't have to be harder than having 2 infants) but I don't think there is a family who would even think about it. For $10/h you can get a nanny for 2 infants so why would you pay the same amount and have a nanny watch 3 kids? If you want to save money then a family will pay $7-8h/hr which makes no sense for a nanny to work for $24/h if you can get easily $20-22/for 2 kids. So nanny share with 3 infants just does not make sense.

What the hours they need they're probably going to lowball someone so the only way you make your money is through overtime. They'd be better off paying for daycare.

It's for 5 days per week, 6:30am-5pm... so 52.5 hours per week.

Right, but they could find a nanny for a 2-child share for $20/hour total, so the same $10 per hour per family.

I know exactly what post you're talking about, as I'm a member of that neighborhood listserv as well. I actually worked that same job (not the same families as the one in the ad obviously, but I took care of three children) for the better part of the last year.

It was incredibly taxing, and even though I was being paid more than I ever had as a nanny, I was underpaid for the job I was doing. I was burnt out and not enjoying my job anymore after about 2 months of work.

3-1 is harder than 6-2 and 9-3, and daycares also have other support staff and management who can step in if necessary. They are also set up specifically for the purpose of caring for children, including kids-height sinks, safe sleep and play areas, etc. 3-1 nannying would be way harder.

Daycares have a 3-1 ratio and pay teachers wayyyyy less. So yes someone with stamina can do this.

You couldn't pay me even a pretty penny to care for three infants as well as deal w/three sets of bosses.

That would be the toughest job in the world!

I recently saw a post on my neighborhood list serv that was advertising for a nanny to care for three infants in a share (3 different sets of parents). I was surprised that anyone would want their child in such a share. What's the motivation? It can't really be financial, as I would think a share for 3 infants would run at least $25/hour.

Nannies, would you accept such a job? If so, what would your rate be?

Parents, would you ever consider a 3-infant share? Why or why not?
