I am a nanny and I wouldn't work in a house without cameras. It is protection for the nanny as well. Yes, the hacking possibility is creepy but not common.

As a nanny, I welcome nanny cams. I want my employers to see how hard I work with their child.

And cameras everywhere is the way of the world now. Nannies should get used to them.

Being watched while I care for your children is just to creepy for me. Plus, you never know who all is watching you.

Nanny cams will not give much safety.. If parents don't have trust in their nannies, then they should not leave their kids with nannies.

If you are not recording audio, you don't have to tell them. No recording in the bathroom or nanny's bedroom, though. I personally think one should tell the nanny

You have to disclose if you use cameras - I'm not from the US so I don't know how legal it is not to, but you have to because that is the way cameras work for you: you don't want to catch the nanny abusing your child, you want to prevent it. If you let people know you have cameras, abusive/neglectful nannies will not be interested to begin with, which will minimise the risk of hiring someone who would not treat your child right.

However, you also lose out on potentially great nannies. I am a fantastic nanny but I would not work in a home with cameras, I just don't want to be watched.

I think a good way of checking up on your nanny is dropping by unexpectedly once in a while, or asking other mothers at the dance group your nanny regularly takes your child to, etc. Ask a friend to watch them for a few minutes in the park. But do it rarely, a couple of times at the beginning just to make sure. Don't make it a habit. I know it's especially tricky to know if you've hired someone good when it's your first time, but the majority of nannies are good people who treat their charges well so don't worry too much.

You may think you are doing something to keep your child safe, but ironically it could be the complete opposite that occurs instead.

Do you really want to take the risk of some sick pedophile watching your child all day??

Hackers who like watching babies all day long are creepy losers.

My sister was changing my nephew's diaper once in his nursery and heard a male voice say "He has diaper rash."
Her husband was deployed at the time and she freaked out. She figured out that someone had hacked their baby monitor and could see her changing the baby's diaper.
He had also started crying at night a lot and during nap times. It was almost hysterical crying. She wonders now if someone was scaring him through the monitor. They are not secure.

So can baby monitors.

I will be hiring a nanny for the first time at the start of next year.
