Depends on the individual.

People don't want to sound like they've let someone take advantage of them (employers or employees). People also like to sound like they've got a great deal going. People who hate their jobs like to complain that they're underpaid, and might make it sound worse than it is.

It also depends on the purpose of the conversation. Are people asking for info? Being competitive about who has the best deal or the best benefit package? Or is it a competition to see who has it worst?

my nanny likes to pick and choose. she'll tell me about one aspect of her nanny friends pay, and then another from another nanny, etc.etc. and then ask for all the most favorable items never taking in the whole picture.

For example:
Nanny friend A gets 20/hour for 3 hours a day of work. I want $20/hour for my 50 hour a week job!
Nanny friend B gets healthcare and car payments each month but makes 10% less in weekly salary than she did before. I want HC and car pmts too!
Nanny friend C gets $50 of gas money to drive kids 1 hour a day to sports at 4pm. I want $50/week for driving to the library twice!

It gets really old. and annoying.

Sure it comes up but the scope of the job also comes up as does the pay structure.
Best to speak about it on a weekly gross cost level to the employer ($850-1000) and the net salary amount to the nanny ($700-800/wk).

I'm open with what we pay and have discussed it fairly frequently. It depends more on who I'm talking to, actually. I have a couple friends who, like me, really have no filter. With these friends, I have previously discussed not only what we pay our nannies but details about our own financial lives (savings, salaries, etc.). With other friends, it's different.

I have discussed it often. Sometimes in pretty general terms when other people are hiring for the first time as pp said. And sometimes in very specific terms when talking with my sister or close friends who also employ nannies (some in other markets than the DC area.)

It's come up, especially when someone is looking to hire the first time.

I've never discussed it with other moms. It would put someone on the spot to ask them what they paid their household employee.

I don't sit around chatting about it, but we have answered friends who are beginning to hire a nanny when they ask how much we started ours at.
