If you really asked your new employer for pay Friday and Labor Day Monday after helping out on Thursday, that's a real immature, dick move. You may have wrecked the relationship with your lack of judgment. Sorry.
OP here. You're misreading. They didn't have to " patch any childcare together". The mom is on maternity leave. She returns Sep. 19th but my start is next week for a transition week. The dad unexpectedly got sent on a business trip, and the mom asked if I could start a week earlier so she can have some help. I had already made vacations plans because the start date was Sep. 12 so I told her I wouldn't be back from vacation until Wednesday. She was fine with that since it was a last minute request and my start date wasn't for another week.
