I drive the kids I nanny about 5 miles to school everyday, to the park, the library, etc. I've never been reimbursed and I don't really feel like asking. I know, "I should" but it maybe costs me at most 10 dollars a week in gas. I drive year 2000 car and even though it's reliable I'm not super concerned with wear and tear. I'm way harder on it outside of work. While you could argue that they should pay for that gas, I'm mostly just greatful that MB and DB are completely ok with me taking the kids out as much as I want and they pay for all the activities.

She gets that for any driving done on the job - inclusive of running the kids to/from school, going to the grocery store, etc..

She keeps a log and we write her a check once a month.

curious how big that monthly check is. ?? $150?! $250?!

It varies significantly. During the year, when the kids are in school most of the mileage is extremely local, so total miles driven might work out to $75-100 in reimbursement. During the summer, when they're taking day trips and things it was not unusual for the monthly reimbursement to be more in the order of $125.

I have no problem with that. I want the kids entertained, I want the nanny to feel compensated fairly, and I think the clarity around using the IRS rates (and all that rate is designed to encompass beyond just gas costs) means I am happy to pay those rates.

$75 a month implies less than 10 miles a day. That's one 5 mile away round trip place only. Easy to get to with a 3 mile round trip preschool pickup and 6 mile round trip Gymboree trip each day. Then factor in library 4 hours one way, play date, etc and easily 15-20 miles a day and that's without a 5 mile one way swim lesson! What a jackpot way to be paid, the maximum Ira rate.

My employers reimburse me for gas weekly in my paycheck because I do alot of distance driving to different schools and sports practices every day. As OP's have said it is alot of wear and tear on your vehicle for maintenance if you're doing that for oil changes, unexpected repairs, etc.

I get paid $28.75 for driving 50 miles. They pay me a rate of .575 per mile. I usually average 121 miles per week. This is in an Audi A4 with 2 kids and a lot of appointments. Which means eating in my car and muddy shoes etc. my employers are generous and know that the reimbursement is not only for gas but tires, oil changes etc that need to be taken care of more frequently due to me using my car for them. Though I'm considering using my other vehicle for work that's paid off it would still be the same since it uses pretty much the same type of maintenance.

Dude, that's like 55 - 90 gallons of gas! What does she drive, a Hummer?
Insurance, etc. is a sunk cost. Gas is variable upon usage.

Why did you agree to this arrangement if you think it's unfair?

We have a nanny car. She is an authorized user on one of our credit cards, so we pay all child related expenses, including gas. Wayyy too much of a hassle to deal with reimbursements and tracking mileage.

The IRS rate is for NORMAL wear and tear. Kids are NOT "normal wear and tear". Car seats and muddy boots can really do a number on your car. So watch out!

How many MB or nannies pay or get paid per mile of driving or a lump sum or is it included in your weekly paycheck?
What if you are FT? PT?
Does more driving mean you may get a lower rate?
Do you really get $25 for driving 50 miles (aka 1.5 gallons of gas in a corolla)?
what if your job is only to pick up the kids from school, drive them to hockey, then drive them home and start dinner? Do you still get mileage or is it included in your pay?
Does anyone get the full IRS amount? Do people get other mileage amounts?
