The only way I would forgive this is if they are on vacation (like, has all of the bad communication occurred over a 1-2 week span?) or literally just had a baby (a newborn can obviously knock you for a loop; I'd be forgiving there).

If I were you OP, I would definitely start looking again.

They seem like they just cannot stick to their word & are kind of flaky.

Trust me, if you decide to take this job, you will exert a ton of frustration over their flakiness.

Sorry they wasted your time, but in the long run you dodged a bullet here.

About 5 days after I sent them my background check and they spoke to my references, I had to email them to check-in and see if the offer was still good. It was and they wanted to setup a time early this week to sign the contract, fill out tax forms, etc. This was last week and I haven't heard anything back. I understand they are busy people but it put a bad taste in my mouth that I had to reach out to them to make sure the offer was no longer contingent. This is also the second time mentioning meeting up that hasn't happened. I like them but communication is important and it's worrying me about what to expect. Am I overreacting or should I maybe start looking again?

You might be working for my old bosses if you are run.....if it's a nanny share on capital hill.

Have a trial period in the contract. Mine stated that either party would exit during the first month for any reason.
