Tell her in writing that she needs to let you know, at MINIMUM, an HOUR before her start time if she's not going to show up for work.

If she has sick days banked, give her sick day pay for the day she missed. If she does not, do not pay for the day she missed.

That first paragraph btw, should be in your nanny contract.

I had to call her when she was 10mins late to see where she was. She responded that she didn't feel well and wouldn't be able to come in. She was waiting to see if she would feel better before she let me know. I understand being sick but she should have let me know right away so I could make other arrangements. Should we let her go for this or do we penalize by not paying her for the day? I feel like if we have her stay we need to do something to show that we are serious about not being late and respectful. In other jobs if your employer had to call to see if you are coming in you would be fired.

If she was sick you have to pay her of corse.

Of corse??? Learn how to spell before you attempt authority over a subject

Starting drafting a reference letter. You want to preserve the established bond.

My gut feeling here is that a). She has something going on in her life like a health or relationship issue that she is having difficulty dealing with or b). She is unhappy in her job & is trying to get you to fire her because she doesn't have the courage to give you notice herself.

You & your nanny need to have a direct conversation where she feels comfortable being completely open + honest w/you.

No matter what, DO NOT DENY her the monies that she is owed.

This would go farther than punitive.

It is illegal to refuse to pay someone their wages for any reason.

Let her go and don't pay her for the day. Your job is dependent on her showing up on time.

She's probably bored and needs something new.

I would write up a written warning/final notice. Don't deduct her pay and don't fire her after years of working with you, not yet. Take the day out of her sick days and rewrite areas of the contract that need to be addresses. Have her sign the new contract and the warning letter. Make copies for all parties after everyone has signed.

It sounds like she resents the talk you had about her lateness before. I agree that she's done with the job for whatever reason. That's the conversation I would have next.

What stupid comments people make. Really???
I would give her a written warning if you really like her. Write into it the exact work days and start times. First I would give her a verbal warning, which you did.
Make it clear that the written warning is the last warning she will get. And then see if she changes...if not and it really bothers you, you will have to let her go...but don't complain every day about it, just will make her annoyed and leave you before you fire her. Just act professionally and give her a written warning.

Not paying her for hours worked is illegal, she can sue you for that! She's not a young kid who you threaten with taking things away, grow up MB! That's actually really messed up to treat a human being like that!!!
If you don't like her, fire her, it's that simple!
But don't treat her like a doormat!!

She sounds unhappy. I would talk to her but if is doesn't get better, consider moving on to a new nanny.

She wants to move on. Be graceful.

Our nanny has been with us for a few years. We like her but have had some problems lately. We have had a problem with her being late by anywhere from 5-15mins.
