This. It's pretty much standard in all other jobs too. Nannying isn't a completely different type of job.

Maybe it would help if you phrased it as "guaranteed hours" (which seems to be the phrase often used on here)? We hired our nanny to work 36 hours/week (9 hours/day, 4 days/week). If we leave town or I take a day off, she gets paid for 36 hours. If she works MORE than 36 hours we pay her for more than 36 hours.

If she asks for a day/days/week off that comes from her vacation or sick time. I will say we've had 2 awesome nannies over the past 5 years and neither ever took a sick day and only one ever used all of her vacation at her request (the more common scenario was that they got 3-4 weeks of vacation a year because we have taken off or had family visiting).

Technically "salaried" means that she could work 50 hours without OT and I think that's usually a way nannies can get screwed. If our nanny asked to leave a few hours early or come in late to handle something I wouldn't get into "you took 3 hours PTO" or whatever but for a whole day, that's vacation.

There could be some miscommunication here. It just seems too outlandish that she would think she can take as much time as she wants off, and still get paid. Maybe what she thinks is that she should get more than just 2 weeks of vacation, basically a few personal days in addition to the 2 weeks? It's customary for nannies to have to take off their 2 weeks of vacation in whole weeks, to coincide when the family vacations. Maybe what she's asking for is a few personal days on top of that to attend to short-term issues, like car repairs, other family obligations? If she's otherwise a good nanny might be worth trying to clarify with her.

Walk away now OP. You are absolutely right with this scenario, but a nanny that claims to be professional while making these kinds of demands will be a nightmare employee. You dodged a bullet.

You're right, nanny is wrong. Under her theory, she could take 50 weeks of vacation a year if she wants and work two weeks of the year, and still be paid. She's either stupid or trying to pull one over on you. Either way, I wouldn't want her working with my kids.

Hahahahahahaha! Um, no. You have it right. I give paid time off, rather than vacation + sick, so she can use it however she wants. Guaranteed hours are for when I cancel, not her.

That said, I have seen a very few nannies post here and elsewhere that they have the arrangement you describe. I do not understand how that can possibly be true, or can possibly work for their nanny families, but they believe that "guaranteed hours" means the same pay 52 weeks a year whether or not they are out of work for any reason or any length of time.

You are not misunderstanding this at all. Does she actually think she can take off as much time as she wants without it impacting her pay? How many employers has she actually convinced to allow this in the past?

We're in the process of hiring a nanny. We offered guaranteed pay, plus 2 weeks vacation and some sick days. Nanny has a previous obligation and needs a day off. No problem. I made a reference to using a vacation day, and found out we have totally different ideas of what that means.

I thought guaranteed pay meant we'd pay for the full 40 hours/week, even if we used less by going on vacation, or coming home from work early, or something. If nanny wanted to take a day off, she used a vacation or sick day. When those were used up, any time she wanted to take off was unpaid.

Our nanny says in the past she's always been "salaried" - paid for 40 hours regardless of how much time she took off. Her vacation was time paid on top of those 40 hours. So, let's say she earned $100/day for an 8 hour day. Each week she was paid $500 no matter what. If she took a vacation day, she worked 4 days and was paid $600. So, her vacation days were just bonus money, not an actual limit on her paid days off.

So, am I totally misunderstanding this?
