Subject: Severance pay for nanny when kids go off to school
Our nanny had been with us for about 5 years. We kept her on payroll for 5 weeks after her official last day. She was very appreciative, and I do think it was unusual to get that amount. She was with us through Covid and was so dependable and trustworthy.

That was rude. I'd be miffed too.

My first job gave me $100 and a Coach purse. Last job gave me $8000.

For an excellent nanny who has been with you for two or more years, I would give a bonus of an extra paycheck if we had ended the job for the reason you have given (not for cause) and with ample notice so she has time to find another position.

We're giving our nanny a paid week off as her last week of working for her. Will probably add a bit extra in to say thanks and so she can enjoy her time off. She does have a new job lined up so I don't really think it's "severance," more just "thanks for all you've done for us."

Several years ago, I read on this board that the typical is one week's pay for every year of service.
I've never received that. Nor have I heard of any nanny receiving that, except on this board.
One week's pay is the most I've ever gotten, and it was appreciated.

MB here. I'd do one week's pay per year of service as a parting bonus, yes.

Since she will be leaving on good terms and plenty of notice, I would offer her two weeks of pay plus a nice homemade Farewell card from your son.

We are putting our son in school and therefore no longer need the services of our nanny. We have given her one month notice and also offered to keep her on a little longer if she has trouble finding a new position, though I doubt she will. We are very happy with her and are only letting her go because our son is ready for school. I am trying to find out what people typically do regarding severance pay, or bonus, or whatever you want to call it when you are letting a good nanny go. It seems like most of the posts about nanny severance address how you handle termination for cause, or if you are not giving advance notice. I just want to know what is typical as a way to reward good service. I saw a couple of references to one-week's pay per year of service and I am wondering if this is typical. Thanks for your help!
