No, it is not typical for a nanny to be compensated for gas getting to + from your home.

If a nanny does receive assistance w/fuel co$ts, then that would be considered a nice PERK, but it should never be considered a given.

I think your nanny is trying to pull the wool over your eyes on this one.

If she is required to do any driving while on-the-job & she uses her personal vehicle, then yes she should be reimbursed financially per mile using the Federal IRS rate at the time.

Hope this helps.

Your nanny is misinformed. I've never heard of a nanny being reimbursed for a commute.

No -- no one pays for the commute. Yes, either provide her a car or reimburse her for miles driven while at work.

She is paid $17/hour for 40 hours.

Hmm...I don't pay for nanny's transportation, she has her own car, which is quite nice. Because her car is new, I wouldn't presume she'd want to transport my kid, but if she did, I would reimburse her, probably at IRS rates.

What employer's pay for transportation, other than maybe the Feds who subsidize Metro trips? I don't think that's normal

Do you pay for your nanny to get to and from your home? Do you let her drive your children in your car? Do you lease a car and let the nanny share it?

My nanny claims that most families provide a transportation allowance for nannies to get to and home from work, but I've spoken with my friends and none of them have paid for transportation. I would certainly pay for mileage if she was driving my children in her car.

Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated!

I suspect she isn't getting paid enough to cover her basic living needs.
1. What's her hourly rate?
2. And weekly gross pay?

It's her responsibility to get to work. She doesn't drove my kids anywhere yet. Since we are nice and she takes the train to get here and the bus we give her a visa gift card and she can spend it however she wants but it would cover her train ticket. She's saving for a car.

We only reimbursement for transportation to and from our child's activities. On occasion, if her car is in the shop, we provide our vehicle.

I've never been asked to provide compensation/reimbursement in the 5 years we've had nannies. (Two long-term, a handful of fill-in/temp nannies during extended leave period.)

I don't think your nanny is right. Paying mileage for any miles driven in the course of the job itself - absolutely, but reimbursing for the cost of the commute to/from work - nope.

It is the nannys responsibility to get to and from work. If she uses her own car to transport your children, then you reimburse her for that.
