I don't do not recommend these nanny tax services. Much less expensive to use something like intuit.

OP, you have the chance now to rewrite the tax issue when you change nanny's contract after your third child is born. So have her fill out a W4 and then do the math to back into the take home pay you decide to offer. Use a nanny tax service and withhold everything from her pay per her W4.

For what it's worth, if you only give raises after the birth of another child, I would stick with the $100 raise, especially if you are finished having kids. Yes, it is on the high end, but $200 in raises over 5+ years isn't outrageous.

Part of what you are paying is employer taxes. Welcome to being an employer. That is NOT part of her salary. What I feel you should do is change the arrangement! What hourly salary do you feel is fair? Offer her that and take taxes from her paycheck, then welcome her to the adult world. When you offer this plan, you will be able to tell her exactly what her pay will be because you already have her tax information. Also, be sure that you are paying legally, which is overtime pay for the last 10 hours.

I'd rather not find a new nanny..

So if I raise her pay to $800 take-home a week, you all think this is more than fair?

Yes, more than fair. And I strongly suggest that you rewrite this for the actual salary ($23/hr), and tell her you will be doing withholding. Right now, if she's getting a tax return, that money should be coming back to you in the current arrangement, which is that you pay her taxes, not that you pay the IRS the estimated taxes, and then she keeps any overage. You should only pay what she actually owes, and if that is less than she sent in, you should get that back.

Going to straight hourly eliminates that issue -- she can do whatever she wants in terms of her W4, and you don't have to feel so taken advantage of.

Agree. I can't quite imagine even that for three.

It all stemmed from a misunderstanding her first year about her weekly pay, and when W-2 time came around, she didn't realize she had to submit money for taxes from her salary and thought we were paying taxes on top. She was such a great nanny that we ended up doing the math and I pay her taxes on top of her pay. It's totally backwards and i want to get out of it. She gets the return, which doesn't seem fair...

So, a $850 take home pay is a salary of $62,296 a year. This seems like a lot to me. I want her to be comfortable, but $800/week with a yearly salary of $57,928 seems more than fair to me. A few hours a day are spent watching tv while the kids are napping, as well as socializing with her nanny friends.

She's making out like a bandit OP. If you try to get out of this arrangement she won't be happy so you have 2 options.. Suck it up and keep being taken advantage of or find a new nanny. Me personally, I'd look for a new nanny.

[40+(10x1.5)] X =850 at $850 a week you are paying $15.45!

Pay her $23/hr at a minimum.

23[40+(10x1.5)]=1265/wk

Wow

oh... I just realized that you are still paying all of her taxes on top of that. That would put her gross pay at $1020 if her tax rate is 20%, which puts her hourly at $18.54. What is her tax rate, OP? Why don't you pay in terms of gross pay as every other employer does? Who pays taxes that are owed at the end of the year? Who gets the return? How bizarre.

$850 for 50 hrs is only $17/hr. Personally I think that is LOW for 3 kids including a newborn.

850. It's 3 kids! Plus the oldest being in school doesn't mean she has less laundry or work during sick days and breaks. Plus 5 years!

We have employed our nanny for 5 years and she is an amazing nanny who we love. She works 50 hours a week and had started with a $650 cash take home pay, with us paying all of her taxes on top of that. After our 2nd child, we increased to $750/week. Soon, I will be going back to work after maternity leave and we will once again need to give her a raise. My oldest child will be in elementary school most of the day, so she will only have 3 children 1-2 hours a day, and will mainly care for my infant and toddler..

What do you think is a fair raise? I was thinking to $800/week (comes to about $23/gross/hour, but my husband is thinking $850 (about $24/hour).
