Actually, I would put a time limit out there. E-mail them and let them know you have received another offer which you need to respond to within 24 hours. Offer to help them get in touch with your references if that is causing the hold-up.

MB here. Yes, I would let them know (though I wouldn't put a short response time like 4 hours unless you absolutely have to.)

Just tell them you really enjoyed meeting them and are very interested in the position and while you don't want to put any pressure on them you have received another offer and are wondering if they are any closer to making a decision.

I would email them and say everything you just said here. Let them know that if you don't hear from them in the next 4 hours, that you will need to accept the other position.

I interviewed with a family on Sunday. They were making to look at a decison quickly. I heard back from the mom on Tuesday letting me know she will check references yesterday and let me know ASAP. I got a good offer today. I still haven't heard back from the other family. Would it be ok to email and ask if they've come to a decision? I don't want to seem pushy but I don't want to accept this position until I know the other position is not available ( I like them more). What would you do if you were in my position?
