What's wrong with YOU? You see this and don't address it immediately and directly? You're as much as a flake and are a weak mother.

If this were real, I'd say: is being on her phone a consistent problem? you've had her for a year and say you've used the cameras so have you ever seen this before? you don't mention it's a pattern (oops, better luck next time) so it's irrelevant. maybe she received serious news or had an emergency with a friend or family member. one day means nothing; everyone has days where they don't perform 100% at work.

Then I'd ask why you went looking for her in the mall rather than texting her and saying, "I'm here for lunch and wanted to visit you guys, but I don't see you at the play area?"???? One of the ways we know your storytelling is that the character doesn't do the logical thing but rather does absolutely nothing then immediately posts on DCUM asking about termination or quitting or reporting to cps or whatever drama you've created. But you are getting much, much better!

Good for nanny. She has multi-tasking down to an art.

A few days ago, I was at work and decided to check in. The nanny was with my daughter (2 yo) but on her phone the whole time - approximately 10 minutes. My daughter was trying to get her attention and she never once looked up. She then began to give my daughter her bottle (I know, 2 yo is too big for bottle), then stopped, picked up the phone and started to use it. My daughter walked around for awhile and tried to get her attention again; still no luck. This basically went on for another 10 minutes and then she finished her bottle.

Later on, I checked in and she was with both my kids (+9 mo old son). My daughter was jumping on the couch. My son was crawling around and she was on her phone. He crawled to her and pulled himself up holding on to her knees, stumbled and fell. She did not look up from her phone.

The next day, she took my daughter to the mall for a kids program. I had an errand there and decided to stop by. There was no sign of them anywhere; I checked the play areas and nothing. When she got home about 2 hours later, I asked how the mall was and she timidly told me that it was fun, lots of singing. I asked if they want to the play area and she didn't look me in the eye but said, yes for a few minutes.

I am really disappointed by all of this...I'm not sure that I trust her and that basically destroys my ability to keep her...any thoughts?

I must say, you sound an awful lot like our resident novelist. Most of us don't write like we're writing a tall tale.

She blatantly lied to you about being @the mall so yes, let her go.

Trust is the foundation to any successful relationship and she breached yours by lying.

I wouldn't issue a warning for her, just her walking papers.

Yes for checking the phone, if you have been clear on usage.

No on the mall- you could have easily missed her.

I'm a nanny and i support you firing her. Her actions are inexcusable. Checking her phone briefly is not a big deal, but it becomes an issue when she is being neglectful. I may check my phone if my MB/DB texts, but that's brief. I do not let it interfere with my level of care, and would never sit there for 10+ minutes ignoring my charges. Either one of your children could of been hurt. There is also the possibility that she lied to you about going to the mall playground. Regardless of what she is going through, she needs to act like a professional. Her personal issues should not override your children needing a caregiver who will give them the love, attention, and safety they need.

PP - That's insulting to say a " mature" nanny is older. I am 27 and more mature than most people my age. I am always mistaken bother nannies and moms for being my charge's mother. The reason being I am very hands-on, playful, loving, and I care about his safety. I've seen so many other nannies, young and older, on their phones, neglecting their charges. Don't think just because someone is older, they will be more " mature " or competent at their job.

OP here, thanks for the advice. My husband suspects something is going on with her and we've tried to be very flexible but, yes, I don't think we can rebuild from here.

I'd fire for being on the phone. We have cameras too. I've seen my nanny check the time and other than that only use the phone during nap time.

MB here.

Yes, I would consider that grounds for terminating, though I might have a very direct conversation with her first.

But it would be hard to rebuild from that level of distrust.

I have had a nanny for almost a year and everything seemed to be going well. We have cameras in the house that we use as baby monitors and nanny cams. She is well aware that they are there and uses them frequently herself.
