Five years ago we paid $19/hr for a legal, experienced nanny in upper NWDC. With taxes, it came out to about $1,700 per month per family. We didn't have any over time. I came over every day at lunchtime to breastfeed (worked nearby), and the nanny didn't seem to mind.

I participate in a share in NW DC. It's all above board. Your cost will depend on how many hours a week you guarantee. I pay $600 a week plus quarterly tax payments of about $1,800. I also use a payroll service, which is like $250 a quarter. It feels a little like a ripoff, but it is nice to be able to do direct deposit for the nanny and set it and forget it.

To break it down for you, that $600 is for 50 hours of work. I pay about $10/hour for 40 hours, plus 10 hours of overtime. The nanny makes $20/hr for 40 hours, and I think her overtime rate is $35/hr.

Each share family also pays 50% of her health premiums, so that's another $130. So nanny actually pays $0 for her health premiums. Which I think is pretty generous.

I have a separate space to work and I am focused on my own thing while the nanny takes care of my son. I do some small visits here and there, but other than that I am out of the picture, yet I found it great to be nearby.

I'm sure the nanny didn't think it was "great" for you to pop in and out "here and there." That's extremely disruptive for most children and very insensitive of the parent, to say the least.

This is exactly why most nanny's will not consider an at-home parent. If parent isn't self-disciplined enough to respect healthy boundaries, it's a bad thing for the child. Just not worth the needless and constant aggravation.

Children typically want to stay with parent if they think it's an option.

My husband's office is at home and it makes no difference to the routine of our nanny, who we have had for 3 years. She does her thing with our kids and he works. Only time it has made a difference has been when she has had to leave on an emergency and he was able to quickly take over.

Hello! I'm interested in having a nanny-share in NW DC. I have a baby who will be 10 months by the time I need the nanny. It is difficult for me to estimate a total monthly cost with taxes, insurance, etc. I will be working full-time, mostly from home, so I will be interested in hosting and sharing with another family. If you have a nanny-share in NW DC, how much do you pay per month, all costs included? Thanks!
