You're super pretty to even think this ! How many sick days did you offer her ? 5 I'm sure ! Let her get well, find back up care and if she get sick 2-3 more times within the NEXT 6 months, she's just sickly and then you can look for another nanny. BTW, Nannies often get sick from kids.

MBs -- PEOPLE GET SICK! Maybe offer a few more paid sick days and don't punish nannies for telling you they're sick!

What BS.

How old is she? Does she get sick often?

I am assuming that w/only one sick day left, she likely gets sick often. That's a lot for only six months.

pneumonia and colds are caused by pretty much the same bacteria/virus. It's what your body does with the invaders that causes it to become a cold or pneumonia. I'm not sure it's something people can control much other than good diet and exercise. If I feel a cold coming on, I load up on Emergen C which seems to help me stave most of them off.

If you're having other problems with your nanny with regard to reliability and punctuality, then by all means address those separately, but don't penalize her for something over which she has no control.

the virus or bacteria that causes pneumonia (depending on the type - it could also be caused by chemical exposure) are contagaious

To answer your question: Wish your nanny a speedy recovery and find back up care. Oh, and don't dock her pay for having pneumonia.

Our nanny of about 6 months hadn't been feeling great for the past few days and thought it was allergies - coughing, sneezing, sore throat. This morning she showed up sounding congested and horrible. She said she wasn't sure how long she could stay because she felt horrible and had been coughing up blood this morning. I told her I wish she had called/texted me because I would have told her to stay home/go straight to the dr. I told her she needed to go to the dr and ended up driving her to her dr (with my 10 month old in the car with us). Turns out she has pneumonia. So now I'm terrified that my 10 month old will come down with pneumonia (we've called the pediatrician and know what to keep an eye out for) AND wondering what to do about continuing with the nanny. This is the second major personal heath issue the nanny has had. There's also been lateness balanced with often being early. Her personal/sick days are pretty much exhausted at this point (she may have 1 left).
