I specifically told an agency that I do not want my references sent to potential families. Obviously I don't want them calling my references before I even talk to them! But they send all my references' private information to a potential family that I have not even spoken to. Such idiots!

This is difficult bc nanny has to do through a process before joining the agency and calling references is part of that process. If you cannot have them call then you shouldn't give their number. You could, obviously too late for OP, tell your family that you are considering picking up a few weekend hours and that they will be receiving a phone call from an agency. Another good thing to do is have your family write a reference letter after the first year so that you have their review of you on record for the agency or whomever.
