I don't know about "most," but my nanny does (40 hrs) b/c I WAH so have no commute. Our friends, who are feds, also have their nanny 40 hours a week by doing the OP's schedule (4, 10-hour days). Both parents work a longer day so that they can have every other Friday off. So, mom covers half the Fridays and dad covers half.

I actually hired a mother's helper who has some overlap with my nanny for the early mornings to help with the school run and do some housekeeping. This gives me a second person to call in case of emergency or if I need additional coverage and helps avoid overtime.

How is this relevant if you don't need to pay OT until you go over your 40 hours per week?

Most full time nannies are working 40-50 hours, and yes your position would be considered full time. You can even frame the mon-thurs schedule as a "perk". So, even though your nanny won't be making any OT, she can work another job on Fridays or pursue other interests.

Yes, a Full-Time Nanny is someone who will be working at least forty hours a week for you. And if by chance you need her to work more hours than that in the same week, then yes....Any hours more would qualify as Overtime hours (OT).

Even if you opt to pay salary vs. hourly, you still by law, need to pay time and 1/2 over 40 weekly hours.

Hope this helps.

Full time is legally 40 hours.

Generally 35 hours is the minimum number of hours that is considered full-time. 40 or 50 hour weeks are pretty common. Anything over 40 hours needs to be paid at an overtime rate of 1.5 times the basic hourly rate.

Your position is full time, yes. And doesn't trigger overtime rates (as long as you don't exceed 40 hours per week.)

We're gearing up to advertise for and hire our first nanny. I want to make sure I understand the semantics so I word the advertisement and communicate with prospects correctly.

When people hire a "full-time" nanny, are they hiring for more than 40 hours per week (given commuting times, etc.)? Is there an overtime rate for the hours over 40, or is the rate flat with the built-in expectation that the hours are long?

If we need coverage only four days a week but for 10 hours each day, is it helpful/appropriate to advertise this as a "full time" position, or not?
