You could ask, but if you've already signed the contract and laundry wasn't discussed, it can put the nanny in an awkward position. Will you be put out if she says no and start looking for new nanny that WILL do it? The nanny might worry about that and agree to it even if she doesn't want to--and that can cause resentment.

I think the best way to approach it is to plan to hire out help for the laundry and shopping and give the nanny "right of first refusal" to take on these additional tasks in exchange for higher pay.

If you do ask, offer a raise to compensate the new work.

Same here. I do kids laundry and bedding but have no interest in your dirty underwear, that's what housekeepers are for. I do not mind grocery shopping and other assistant type errands.

Some nannies are willing to do laundry (and are more willing to do that than other housekeeping tasks). Some nannies are more willing to cook for parents. Some nannies don't mind doing the grocery shopping. You need to talk to your nanny, make sure that she has the time to do what you want and offer extra compensation. Make sure that she has whatever supplies she wants and needs (dye- and fragrance-free detergent, stain remover spray, etc.). Please be aware that ironing takes a long time, most nannies won't agree to more than an hour of ironing each week if they agree to even that.

If you want the nanny to do your grocery shopping, you need to have a plan for how she will pay for the groceries. Will you give her a set amount of cash every week? Will you give her a store gift card? Will you do a prepaid debit card? Will you give her a credit card in her name attached to your account? Most nannies won't be willing to do your shopping if you intend to reimburse her after she uses her own money.

It really depends on the circumstances. Yes if it was discussed prior to hiring, or if it wasn't but you plan to compensate extra and are okay if she says no. No it is not okay if it wasn't discussed prior to hiring, and you just want her add to her duties but not increase compensation, and especially not if you will hold it against her if she says no.

Discuss before you hire. Some are okay with it, many are not.
