Do you get paid for Thanksgiving, OP?

Well it would depend on your contract or verbal agreement upon hire.

If you didn't do either of these, then I would consider doing so as an act of goodwill. If she has proven to be reliable, responsible, loving & engaging, I cannot see a better investment on your part.

Did OP have a contract? I don't think so.

It was in our contract that she was paid on 10 major holidays, Thanksgiving and Black Friday were two of them.

So then what is your question?

So you should probably go by your contract.
You can negotiate new terms next year, but it most likely won't go over well to take away paid holidays/

If you don't want to pay her, she may want to replace you with a better job. Seems logical to me.

Whether or not you "have to" pay her will depend on the contract you have with her. If you have no contract, then no, you don't "have to" pay her.

However, a better question would be "should you" pay her? If you like her, and want her to stay with you, you should.

But, I wanted to add that if this is a regular, FT employee that you hope to maintain a positive, long term relationship with, this lack of clarity on thanksgiving pay is big warning sign that there are gaps in your planning. You need to discuss and explicitly clarify all sorts of things like vacation pay, sick time, holiday pay, guaranteed schedule and/guaranteed payments, etc, etc. All of this should be in a written contract.

This is a babysitter who covers random shifts as needed (in which case, no pay when not needed) or is this a nanny who has a set schedule and keeps that time reserved just for your family (in which case you do pay)?

Do you have a nanny or a babysitter? Nannies should have contracts, and most make sure the contract guarantees holiday pay. A babysitter is a much less formal arrangement, and most don't have contracts, so most don't get holiday pay.
