A nanny is Arlington can get a single infant for $16 to $20 an hour. Why would any good nanny agree to double the work for the same price?
Go find that job then. Why are you wasting your time here? Why are there so many nannies commenting on rates they *think* is too low?
Here is the reason. Sure, there are lots of $16 nanny jobs for 1 infant. There are also tons of nannies available. Basically anybody with all limbs and a beating heart can apply. MBs get 50-200 applications, depending on how long the ads are out there and how many places they posted. Of those, people who speak fluent English, personable, reliable, good references, experience with infants gets the job.
What happens to the nannies whose English is just passable, has to rely on public transportation or rides and can't drive charges to places, etc etc? What happens to the good people who are just good enough to keep kids safe and entertained but who are not at the top of the pile? They take the $16-$20 nanny share jobs.
$16-$20 shares are out there and all parties are happy. MBs are happy for finding a good childcare that is more customized than daycare and they don't have to send their kids out every morning. Nannies are happy for having found a job. Children are happy because they don't care about grammar, they only care how much they feel loved, appreciated and played with. If it works for all involved, why are nannies on DCUM so unhappy about it?
If you don't work for that little, good for you. Don't knock it for others. The amount of anger every time rates come up tell me that the nannies out there are not getting what they think they deserve. You can think about all you deserve all you want. MBs think they deserve more than they get too. It doesn't change the market rate.
