That's why I said hire a housekeeper/nanny or a household manager. There are a lot of people interested in a long term job with varied duties who maybe don't want to be with kids all day long. I suggest you don't apply for this job.

I never met a nanny (or "housekeeper nanny") who wants to clean your crap, unless there's no other job option for her.

Do a quick search on care.com. There are lots and lots of housekeepers looking for work, and many of them also advertise that they will care for children. Do you really think there is no one in the world who can do a good job with children and manage a household? Some people like to clean to the same extent that other people like to hang out all day with toddlers, which would drive me batty!

OP here- thanks PP. Right? I thought the idea of no kids around from 9-12 and tidying the kids' rooms or organizing the playroom or shopping/prepping lunch or dinner would be nice while still getting paid and not having any children to mind... I mean, this is the stuff moms dream about when kids are finally old enough to go to school. But as I said, this is all new to me, so I appreciate the insight on what typical nannies want to do. I will definitely go another direction.

Thank you for this insight on the distinction...! (OP here) I do appreciate it and hadn't considered it before.

Nice, mature housekeeper would fit your bill.
Or do a live in au pair.

OP, before you do this, think about it a little more. You're already talking about a lot of money (drop off is at 8? 9?). If you're going to pay someone from 8-6 every day no matter what, why not look for a housekeeper/nanny or a household manager and let this person take a few more chores off the table. Especially if you travel sometimes, this would mean someone who could really make your life easier.

It sounds like you have a preschooler and an older child. In that case, this is a person who could grow with your family as you get to the ages when you really only need after-school care ... except when you're traveling, or for school holidays, or for sick days.

I agree that you have to pay for availability if the person isn't going to work, but why not instead use the time you're paying for and hire the kind of person who is happy to transition into more of a combined role than a purely nanny role.

Hope that makes sense. I'm not sure what other families do.

It really depends on the individual nanny, OP. You need to ask her.

Parents need to pay for nanny flexibility.

I'm a nanny that drops off in the morning and then pick up at noon. During the morning I do school work or something and I'm being paid for the time.
For holiday and sick days, I have the kids all day.

I need a full time position and my family pays full time without me having to ask.
I know another nanny who isn't being paid for the same schedule. But she also can't look for another morning job because the family expects her to be available if school's out.

I feel like you should pay for her availability. She would be keeping her morning free for you. If not, she may not be available some of the days you need her.

I would definitely give her a schedule. She probably wants to plan ahead for the mornings she's needed. I wouldn't see a text about the same morning until it was too late.

I had a job that paid a very generous FT rate for PT hours. One child was in elementary school. I could do whatever I wanted most of every day, but agreed to be available in case of emergency. That happened only once when grandparent needed to go to ER.

Want to switch to a Nanny for 12-6pm for one child and 4-6pm for the second child, so he/she would need to work every day from 12-6. Sometimes, though, spouse and I have travel or early meetings, so would want the Nanny to do drop offs and then nothing until noon.

How does this work in practice? Do most people just pay the Nanny full time and text only on the mornings she's needed (or send out a Sun night schedule)? Or do most people embrace the routine and have the Nanny drop off every day because she's available (and then she can do what she wants until noon)? Or do they have some light chores?

Just wondering what people do in practice- it is all new to me. thank you
